During high school I became a pagan for a while. Pagans aren't like the big three monotheistic religions. In fact pagan is a broad term used to describe many "traditions" within a polytheistic community. Terminology aside I was drawn to paganism for several reasons:No hell, More than one god, and Magick(yes it's spelled that way).

At first I thought it would be a fitting alternative to Christianity. Christians at the time didn't resonate too well with me, I tried church once and never returned because of the way I was received by the other church goers. After some time being a pagan I began to feel the same bitterness. Infighting lead to the particular group I was in disbanding. Not all the members we're unkind or unreasonable, in fact one was a good friend of mine.

I attribute the group disbanding to one reason. The head priestess came from a heavily protestant family, she converted because she felt repressed by her former religion, however I feel she thought all religion needed to be a strict and rigid as her prior. This is not what I became a pagan for, I didn't want strict religion I wanted free form belief.

Shortly after the group broke up, I felt Christianity was once again trying to annex the the other religions of the world as it had in the dark ages. I became and atheist shortly thereafter.

Discuss? :dontknow:

I think that a big problem with "alternative" religions is that the adherents tend not to be very responsive to hierarchy, which might be why they choose an alternative. It has the side effect of making them hard to organize. Your former head priestess doubtless found that in trying to maintain a hierarchy on a group of rebels, she ended up herding cats. Doubtless she wanted the structure, because despite being repressed by her prior church, she still wanted the safety net of structure. My guess would be that she's probably not a pagan anymore either.

There wasn't necessarily meant to be a hierarchy, people just sorta got together or practiced alone, but I can see what you mean about herding cats.
