Answering some of the posts about Penn reminded me of his novel Sock. I can't say enough about this book. It is bizarre to say the least and funny. Essentially it is a murder mystery as told through the eyes of a sock monkey. Penn imbeds among the story some interesting essays gauged on philosophy and wraps it all up with some rather hard hitting Atheist manifesto type. And then there's his style. Penn manages to wrap virtually every thought, every paragraph around some great pop culture reference, mostly song lyrics from the 70's and 80's. I absolutely loved this book.

A little side note, I saw the film The Aristocrats at Sundance and word Penn was out and about so I expected him to be at the screening. I brought my copy of Sock to get his signature. Alas he had flown back to Vegas that morning as he became ill. I spoke to the director Paul Provenza and lamented missing Penn. He offered to take my copy of the book back and have Penn sign it and return it. I really didn't have a lot of hopes it would make it, and indeed I didn't see the book again. I'd like to think Provenza lost it or my address before it got to Penn. Oh well, I hope to go the the Amazing Meeting next year in Vegas. I'll try to run him down then.
