Genesis 1:29 God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
So I'm wondering, should I decipher this to mean we should be vegetarians? Or just take it to mean ALL vegetation is suitable for consumption, excuse me while I toss up a little hemlock salad. __________________

I like poison ivy as a garnish in my hemlock salad, please. With psilocybin dressing.

I've tried pulling that argument out whenever the religious right tries to tell me I can't smoke pot.

Another excellent reason to conclude the writer(s) of Genesis probably did not intend it to be taken literally.

OK, so just what passages should we take as Bible and which ones as parable. I get so many apologists say we shouldn't take it as literal but as moral tales and various metaphors, but then I point out the main theme of the virgin birth, crucifixion and subsequent resurrection they'll always jump up and say, "Oh no, THAT one is for real!"
Then the get insulted when I laugh.

The book THE CHINA STUDY is referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" by The New York Times. A reading will likely convince of the vegetarian wisdom.
My bible thumper nemesis, the math professor, disagreeing to my quotes.
The phrases I disagree most with are
"Welcome to Life. The bible is the instruction set. Unfortunately it is written for men of past ages and is sorely in need of a re-write."
and
"Older texts are not as capable of referencing the 21st century situation."
The Bible explains the condition of man and presents the Solution. My "problems", your "problems" and the "problems" of people 4 thousand years ago are exactly the same - greed, pride, lieing, cheating, stealing, lust, anger, hatred, jealousy, etc. Add to that the prophetic nature of much of Scripture (much already obviously fulfilled and many other pieces falling into place) it is clear to me that the Bible is not just relevant, it is essential reading.
Do you mind if I ask how you decide which ideas of Scripture are relevant and which are in need of rewrite? Who or what is the ultimate authority?
John
If only it was prophetic the thumpers might have a case for what is REAL. What's that obviously fullfilled part about?
I did respond to his last two questions. "Me. I decide." Been a while since I've heard from him.
But seriously. THE CHINA STUDY. A lot of tax dollars pulling conclusions together told by a guy in the field. Eye opening.
