Kathy Griffin's comments (red headed comedian) during the 2007 Creative Arts Emmy's are going to be censored when aired on E!.
If you guys missed it, she said, "A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this. He had nothing to do with this... suck it Jesus, this award is my God now."
Catholic League President Bill Donohue is throwing a fit about the whole thing. He's asking for an apology from Kathy even though he knows she is a 'militant' atheist.
I believe that as an atheist, I have the right to give my opinion about other people's religions. However, as an atheist, I understand that we are not seen in the greatest light. I'm glad she said what she said, but I wish she would have changed the forum as to avoid the negative connotation on atheists. I do not feel she should apologize however. I don't believe she can be seen as a bigot as Mr. Donohue has said. She is not prejudiced against christians. She is only mocking their idol. It's almost the same situation with the depiction of Muhammed in the Danish cartoons except now it's the christians that are pissed.
Your thoughts?

Well, she had to expect this kind of reaction saying "Suck it Jesus" on national TV. That being said, I thought it was hilarious and my respect for her has gone up a few points. Her next quote in the news should be "Suck it Donahue."

Yeah, but who cares about Donohue? Personally, if I were Kathy, the next time I get a chance I'd be using my first amendment rights to show Bill how I really felt about his religion.

Exactly! Who cares how many times fundies come up and thank God, Jesus, Jehovah, Yaweh and whoever else for the award, if you call them out on it once "they're persecuted and offended."
Hat it been Mohammed people would have been cheering. Personally, I think she said and did nothing wrong. The censorship of her comments is wrong.

JUst once I'd like to see the camera zoom in to the loser and catch 'em saying "Jesus fucked me again!"

It'll never happen. Those losers usually stay at home and boycott those awards. Kathy G just went up about 100 points in my book. Witty, intelligent, and we share the same last name! Can't get much better than that.

I'm sure many of you heard about this, but Kathy Griffin has raised the ire of Catholic Bully Bill Donohue.
Heres the speech:
"A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. Can you believe this shit? Hell has frozen over. Suck it, Jesus. This award is my God now."
Bill Donohue was quoted as saying that if she doesn't apologize she'll be known as a "foul-mouthed bigot for the rest of her life."
Skeptico (http://skeptico.blogs.com/skeptico/2007/09/suck-it-jesus.html) has more.
When will someone just punch out this wind bag?

I always liked her in the sitcom she was on (can't remember the name) and now I like her even more. These nutjobs thanking Jesus for everything under the sun makes me wonder why they think they're so important that this god even could give two shits about any kind of award. And that brings to mind these baseball players who cross themselves every time at the plate, and most of the time ground out, strike out or pop up. What do they think? Doesn't god love them? When they do get a hit, they point upward in thanks. Holy shit!! Doesn't god have more important things to do? The FSM would care a lot more about sports than Jesus....dontja think? Anyhow, Kathy rocks!!

Yup.
It's estimated that 5.6 million children die each year because they have too little food. In the course of one 2.5 hour football game 1600 children will die of hunger.
In the US alone, 1500 kids will die in the next 12 months because at least 1500 cowards think it's okay to beat or neglect children.
We'll lose 3 million children around the globe this year from diarrheal illness. In many cases the cause will be a simple virus for which there is a vaccine.

"Our god is an awesome god..." Question-Does Barry Bonds pray to god or Balco for breaking the HR record? :adore:

Praise and thank god that he only killed 1600 kids during the superbowl. I mean, he could have killed WAY more! What a kind and benevolent god we have...

I always have to chuckle at these Christians who complain about being persecuted. They RUN things! How persecuted can they possibly be?? It's just a larger scale of the Mormons' persecution complex here in Utah.

Ah, but it is extremely beneficial to many faiths to feel attacked. Think about it: if you have submitted yourself so totally to God's will that you depend on it emotionally, would it bring you closer to, or send you away from, your God, when you are attacked for your beliefs? You have to understand that arguing with someone like Kent Hovind, Pat Robertson, or anyone like them, is a debate against their emotional constitution, and not against their ideals. It is for that precise reason that faith is so hard to combat with argumentation.

I guess it's a form of xenophobia, where the tribe circles the wagons, so to speak, even if there can be no real threat from outsiders.
I just think it's an interesting phenomenon that those who are really "strong" in their faith are afraid of some comedian who got up and declared that she earned her own award. What are they so afraid of?
Maybe they're not as sure of their professed stance as they would have everyone believe.

I don't know. I can't help but think that's a bit of an oversimplification. For some people, yes, that's undoubtedly true, but for others... Well, you just have to keep in mind that for many religious people, assurance is supported less by tenable argumentation, and more by emotion. To attack Jesus on any level is to threated the emotional stability of millions of Christians. Many of them may be overcompensating for lack of absolute certainty (and every Christian wavers at some point, admittedly or not), but for many more, it simply means something different.

I understand what you're saying, and I think there's a lot of truth to it. But it's so discouraging... To me that's saying that there will NEVER be a time when differences of opinion can be expressed without the unbeliever being roundly attacked through an automatic emotional response. Coexistence can take place only if we keep our mouths shut...

So true Lacky. I recall the day John Lennon proclaimed The Beatles to be mor popular than Jesus Christ. That sparked a revival movement across the land we hadn't seen for a spell. Now the "New Atheists" are doing much the same.
Imagine no religion.....

Indeed. And the first step to a world without religion is taking the undue privilege away from religion, and demanding they hold themselves to the same standards of intellectual honesty as everything else. No longer should child abuse be protected under freedom of religion. No longer should churches roundly avoid taxes simply for being religious. No longer should we tiptoe around criticism of beliefs. Hope is probably already lost for most of the adults today, but we can reverse or prevent indoctrination with certain educational measures.
